James Aloyisius Wirthlin was born November 5, 1911 in St. Louis, Missouri the son of Louis and Helen (Wachter) Wirthlin. He graduated from high school in St. Louis. On December 8, 1941 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in WW II and the Korean War. He was stationed in Honolulu, Guam and San Diego. After spending 30 years in the Navy he retired in December of 1971 with the rank of Senior Chief. In 1943 he married Florence Mae Comar, she died in 1989. In 1992 he married Betty Jane McClane. When he was younger he was an avid golfer and he loved raising prize winning roses. He moved to Kalona in 2004 to be near his son. James died suddenly on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 93 years. James is survived by a son Jim Wirthlin and wife Gayle of Kalona; and 3 grandchildren - Ryan, Kelly and Jonathan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Florence and Betty; and 3 brothers.
