William T. Axmear

William Thomas Axmear was born on June 4, 1940, at home in South English, Iowa, to William Lloyd and K. Louise Moss Axmear. He graduated from North English High School in 1957 and attended Parson's College for two years before joining the United States Navy. He served four years in the U.S.N.T.C. Navy Bank as first c hair and solo trombonist and attained the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. He was a participant with the Navy Pistol Team, a lifeguard and skin diver with the U.S. Navy. After returning to South English in 1963, William was the leader of the Union Church Youth Group and a member of the South English Volunteer Fire Department. He married Sheryl L. Edmundson on July 17, 1965, and was a very proud father of Melissa Sue. William was Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 50 for twenty-five years and received the following awards: The Silver Beaver Award, Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow, and Chief of Knohocado. William was also a Third Degree Black Belt instructor in the United States Tae Kwon Do Federation. William was employed by White State Bank for 41 years. He was a member of the James Murphy American Legion Post #319 in Keswick. William was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting. Williams greatest joy in life, which he shared with his wife, Sheryl, was raising their daughter Melissa. William died following a short illness on Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. He was a loving husband and father, and good friend to many. Survivors include his wife, Sheryl Axmear of South English, daughter, Melissa Axmear of Coralville, and brother, Fred Axmear of South English. Also surviving are his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Arletta and W. Wayne Edmundson, sister-in-law, Jane Axmear, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dixie and Leland Fry, three nephews: Scott, Kris and Ethan, and one niece Stacy. Memorial services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Private burial services will be held at the South English Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 from 4 PM to 8 PM.
