William Howard Sleeth, 70, died Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, losing his courageous battle with cancer and a history of heart problems. Howard was born October, 25, 1935 in Coal City, Iowa. He was raised with the family of Sylvia Hahn Pence and attended school in West Branch, Iowa. He served in the Air Force for 1953-1966. Howard worked as a mechanic for United Airlines in San Francisco, CA for 25 years before retiring. Howard was married to Charmaine Bauer on 6/1/1957 and lived in California. She died on 1/2/1990. Howard married Anna Marie Hahn Smith on 2/9/1992 and returned to live in rural Parnell, IA. Howard enjoyed his grandchildren and would always offer to babysit, he also loved to fish and work with his hands. Howard is survived by his wife Anna Marie; a foster sister, foster brother and 3 sisters; 2 sons, Mark and Diane Sleeth and Paul Sleeth, 1 daughter Tammy and Bob Simons, all from California; 3 stepsons Mike and Julie Smith of North English, Larry and Tammy Smith of Conroy, Leo Jr. and Sherri Smith of Williamsburg, 2 stepdaughters Carolyn Crew and special friend Gary Hudepohl of Williamsburg and Deb and Mike Rogers of Missouri; 23 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Following Howard's wishes, there will be no visitation or service. He requested that there be an Open House for family and friends at his home, which will be on Friday, January 13th from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in memory of Howard.
