William "Bill" Nisly was born October 15, 1918 near Hutchinson, Kansas the son of Albert and Rachel (Mast) Nisly. He grew up in Kansas and moved to Iowa in 1935 at the age of 17. On November 24, 1940 he was united in marriage to Edith Swartzendruber at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wellman. They made their home in the Wellman community where he farmed. He operated a grocery store in Kalona from 1961 - 1971, delivered bulk gas from 1971 - 1988, and he drove school bus for the Mid-Prairie Community School District for many years. He was a member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church. He volunteered at the Pleasantview Home, Crowded Closet and served with prison ministries. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and his miniature ponies. Bill died on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 93 years. Bill is survived by his wife Edith of Kalona; 8 children - Rachel (Alvin) Kemp of Wellman; Sheldon (Miriam) Nisly of Kalona; Weldon (Margaret) Nisly of Seattle, WA; Wendell (Muriel) Nisly of Kalona; Jenelle (Dwight) Bender of Kalona; Marcus Nisly of Goshen, IN; Hope Nisly (Douglas Kliewer) of Reedley, CA; Ross (Tracy) Nisly of Hutchinson, KS; 22 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; 3 sisters - Susie Strubhar of Hubbard, OR; Irene Peachy of East Flat Rock, NC; Ruth Nisly of Portland, OR; a brother - Alvin Nisly of McMinnville, OR; sisters and brothers-in-law - Effie Miller of Kalona; Ellis and Ila Swartzendruber; Ethel and Henry Miller and Mary Elva and Vernon Ropp. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law Sherry Nisly, 3 brothers - Enos Nisly, Daniel Nisly, and an infant; and sisters and brothers-in-law - Mildred and Dan Graber; Morris and Alta Swartzendruber; and John Miller. A Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Upper Deer Creek Cemetery in rural Wellman. Followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor John King, Pastor Floyd Helmuth and Pastor Floyd Yutzy will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Sunnyside Church Missions and Iowa City Hospice. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
