William "Bill" Hassenfritz

William "Bill" Lee Hassenfritz, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Sunday, October 30, 2011, at his home. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, beginning at 12 noon, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. that evening. A funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Reverend Joseph Phung, celebrant. Interment will be at the St. Alphonsus Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials have been established to the Southeast Iowa WWII Honor Tours or the Henry County Health Center Foundation. The son of George R. and Anna M. (Schamper) Hassenfritz, Bill was born on October 22, 1926, in New London, Iowa. He attended New London schools graduating from New London High School in 1944. He served his country in the United States Navy being honorably discharged in Louisville, Kentucky. On February 7, 1948, he married Sally Ann Boyle in Burlington, Iowa. Bill owned and operated the Standard Oil Gas Station in Mt. Pleasant for five years. He then began working for Tom Harney at the International Harvester dealership. He later bought the dealership and operated Hassenfritz Incorporated for 40 years. A devout member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Bill also served on the finance committee. He served as a director for both the Mt. Pleasant Bank and Trust, and the Hawkeye Bank. His greatest enjoyment was his family. He was a member of the American Legion Post #58, and enjoyed antique cars, boating on the Mississippi River, and farming. Survivors include his wife, Sally of Mt. Pleasant; four children, Jim Hassenfritz of Burlington, CO, Marti (Jerry) Roling of Cedar Falls, IA, Tom (Kimn) Hassenfritz of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Joe (Jean) Hassenfritz of Rosemount, MN; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marcy Hassenfritz; a niece and three nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bob Hassenfritz.
