Wilbur Swartzendruber was born June 24, 1925 in Johnson County near Wellman, Iowa the son of Peter and Lydia Swartzendruber. Wilbur and Lois were united in marriage on June 5, 1949 in Wayland. They made their home in Wellman where Wilbur was an Auctioneer and was an active member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. He was very involved in the Wellman community where he served as Mayor of Wellman for 4 years, the Wellman City Council for 2 years, Wellman Fire Department since 1957, Wellman Cooperative Telephone Association for 40 years, past President of Wellman Community Club, and charter member of the Jolly Men's Club. He helped in the organizing of the Iowa Mennonite Central Committee sale. And he volunteered with Mennonite Disaster Service, Habitat For Humanity, and Auctioneer for the Pleasantview Home benefit sale and Johnson County 4H fair. Wilbur died on Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a lengthy illness at the age of 82 years. Wilbur is survived by his wife Lois of Wellman, a daughter - Joyce Swartzendruber and husband James Melnis of Orono, Maine; 2 sons - Doug Swartzendruber and wife Gail of Castro Valley, California; Jim Swartzendruber of North Liberty; 2 brothers - Mark Swartzendruber of Kalona; John Swartzendruber of Wayland; and a sister Faith Carpenter of Sturgis, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Rev. Marvin Hostetler and Chaplain Donnita Payne-Hostetler will officiate. A private family graveside service will be held prior to the service in the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Wellman Fire Department and the Iowa MCC Relief Sale.
