Wendell F. Peterson, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, November 09, 2012, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 12, 2012, beginning after 12 noon, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial will follow in Swedesburg Cemetery with military rites provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. Memorials have been established to Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church and The Parkinson's Foundation. Born September 12, 1923, in rural Swedesburg, IA, Wendell Floy was the son of Lloyd Canby and Madie Christine Vollmer Peterson. He attended rural schools and was a 1941 graduate of Olds High School. Following high school, Wendell attended Iowa Wesleyan College for two years, along with taking a correspondence course in architecture from the University of Chicago. He married Audrey Elaine Peterson on August 3, 1943, in Salt Lake City, UT. Wendell served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, as a member of the Radio Signal Corps, in the Philippines. He was trained in drafting, a skill which he used throughout the rest of his life. At the time of his discharge, Wendell held the rank of sergeant. A lifelong Henry County resident and owner of Peterson Implement all of his life until the business closed in 1992, Wendell enjoyed using his creative talents to make and build things. A member of Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wendell was active and always ready to lend a hand. He loved being a part of the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. He enjoyed photography, developed his own film, and made home movies. Wendell traveled extensively throughout the United States. Along with his wife, Audrey, Wendell is survived by one son, Dan Peterson of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three daughters, Cindy (Dale) Tarrence of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Margie (Matthew) Peek of Wichita, KS, and Nancy (Jeff) Wood of Ft. Worth, TX; six grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Wendell was preceded in death by his parents.
