Kalona-Walter Lewis Beachy was born January 9,1929 in Sherwood, Ohio, the son of Jonas J. and Leah (Mast) Beachy. He lived in Mark Center, Ohio until he was 13 years old then the family move to Iowa in 1942. In 1946 he became a Christian, redeemed from the World. Walter was united in marriage to Laurine Marie Miller on September 28, 1950 near Kalona. In 1959 he was ordained to the Ministry and in 1962 he was ordained as Bishop and was presently serving as a semi-retired Minister at Salem Mennonite Fellowship. He also worked as a farmer and carpenter. He died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 85 years. Walter is survived by his wife: Laurine; 8 children: Marietta (James)Yoder of Kokomo, MS. Wilford (Alice) Beachy of Kalona, Leah Belle (Paul) Stutzman of Olathe, CO. Cynthia (John Mark) Miller of Brashear, MO. Daryl (Rachel) Beachy of Kalona, Richard (Rhoda) Beachy of Wellman, Myrna (Nathan) Byers of Kirksville, MO. And Jolene Rose Beachy of Kalona; 44 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; 4 brothers: Ezra Paul (Marge) Beachy of Sarasota, FL. Lester (Lorraine) Beachy M.D. of Des Moines, John Henry (Emma) Beachy of Riverside and Howard Jay Beachy of Albany, OR and 2 sisters: Esther Yoder of Kalona and Fannie Schrock of Burlington Junction, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Lizzie Rogers and an infant; 2 brothers-in-law: Ernest Yoder and Edwin Schrock and 3 sisters-in-law: Alice Beachy, Elsie Beachy and Leda Beachy. Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Fairview Mennonite Church near Kalona. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, Saturday from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Fairview Mennonite Church. Burial will be at East Union Cemetery. Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is caring for Walter and his family.
