Wade Dean Johnston was born on November 10, 1923 near North English, IA, a son of Charles Leroy and Bertha Maude Bair Johnston. He grew up in the North English community and attended North English High School. Wade was united in marriage to Marjorie Maxine Lockridge on December 20, 1941 in Kirksville, MO. They farmed in the Green Valley community until moving into town in 1954. Wade served as the Marshall for the city of North English for 4 years and as custodian at the North English High School for 28 years. He retired in 1986. Wade was baptized in 1947 and was a lifelong member of the Christian Church. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge from 1952 until it closed. Wade loved spending time with his family, hunting and fishing. He was an avid baseball fan, especially the Chicago Cubs. Wade died of cancer at his home in North English on Saturday, July 24, 2004. He lived 80 years, 8 months and 15 days. He is survived by his wife Marjorie of North English; daughters: Margo Redlinger (Cletus) of Iowa City, IA; Pamela Thodos of Iowa City, IA; sons Ronald Johnston of Atlanta, GA; Francis L. Johnston (Joan) of Washington, IA; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren; sisters: Tressie Morrison and Elma Morrison, both of North English, IA; He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Eldon, Vern, Cloyd and Ward Johnston; sisters: Ila Lown, Grace Morrison, Vivian Bair and Treva Wilhite; and grandchildren Michael Johnston and Philip Knebel. Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:30 AM, Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the North English Christian Church. Pastor Don Ridenour will officiate. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home in North English on Tuesday, July 27th from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the family being present from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church; Hospice of Iowa County and the North English First Responders.
