Virginia M. Smith

Virginia M. (Mrs. Harry) Smith, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Monday, August 17, 2009, at the Henry County Health Center. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2009, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Cedar Creek Cemetery. The daughter of James O. and Leola Pearl (Hite) Miller, Virginia was born April 1, 1923 at home near Trenton, IA. She attended the Trenton School and then graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1940. On July 21, 1940, at her parents' home in rural Wayland, she married Harry K. Smith who precedes her in death. Virginia has been a resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1940. Virginia was a homemaker who enjoyed canning and was known for her grape jelly making. After her children were grown, Virginia worked for Peterson Insurance Agency as a secretary. Virginia loved taking care of her family. Spending time with her grandson and great grandson was especially enjoyable. She also enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. Virginia is survived by a son Carroll (Mary) Smith of Danville, IA; a daughter Joyce Smith of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a grandson Anthony "A.J." (Toni) Smith of Quincy, IL and a great grandson Garrett; and two sisters Marion Courtney of Paris, TX and LaVaughn (Delbert) Krotz of Washington, IA. Along with her husband, Virginia is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Juanita Bonser. .
