Virginia Ann Townsend was born Monday, December 2, 1929 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of John A. and Pearl (McClelland) Canott. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1947. On August 20, 1947 she was united in marriage to Cecil James Townsend in Iowa City. Virginia has lived most of her life in the Wellman community. She worked at Thomas & Betts and Oral B in Iowa City; and then was a cook for the Mid-Prairie Community School District. She enjoyed cooking for and spending time with her family, going to garage sales and auctions, and dancing. Virginia died Saturday, September 1, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness at the age of 77 years. Virginia is survived by 5 children - Jim Townsend (Nancy) of Wellman; John Townsend (Carolyn) of Wellman; Jerry Townsend (Maureen) of North English; Jayne Hochstedler (Gary) of Frytown; Mike Townsend (Jane) of Wellman; 19 grandchildren - Todd Townsend of Kalona; Jamie Townsend of Washington; Amy Mattes of Kalona; Chris Townsend of Silverthorne, CO.; Jennifer Callahan of Wellman; Andy Townsend o Goode, VA.; Nicole Slaubaugh of Wellman; Joseph Townsend of Iowa City; Brandon LeFever of Iowa City; Alexander Mims, Tonya Mims, William Townsend, Anna Townsend, Anna Townsend, Robert Townsend, Michael Townsend all of North English; Ryan Miller of Frytown; Jeff Miller of Wellman; Nicole Beckley of Joetsu, Japan; Amanda Immerman of Cedar Rapids; 11 great grandchildren; a brother John Canott of Kalona; 2 sisters - Mildred Lemley of Lone Tree; Evelyn Leigh of Wellman; and special friend George Zousel of Wellman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cecil in September of 1976; a daughter JoAnn in May 1967; a grandson Timothy in 1974; and a brother Francis.
A memorial fund has been established for the Wellman Senior Center.
