Virgil Lynn Miller was born July 10, 1940, in rural Kalona, Iowa, the son of Emery B. and Mary Edna (Shetler) Miller. He died on Sunday, January 1st, 2012, at the age of 71 years. On June 27th, 1964, he was united in marriage to Lulu Jane Brenneman, daughter of Ephriam and Anna Faye (Christner) Brenneman, at the Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona, Iowa. Virgil is survived by two sons, Bruce A. Miller (Monica) of Porter Ranch, California, and Dr. Scott D. Miller (Karen) of North Liberty, Iowa, six grandchildren, Celeste, Emery (Emme), Brooke, Isaac, Tessa, and Evan, three sisters, Laurine Beachy (Walter) of Kalona, Iowa, Edna Beachy (Alvin) of New Carlisle, Indiana, Dorothy Mast (Alvin) of Parsonsburg, Maryland, and a brother, Gordon K. Miller (Iva) of Kalona, Iowa, three brothers-in-law, Ivan Brenneman (Paula) of Marina, California, Milford Brenneman of Anaheim, California, and J. Edward Yoder of Donnellson, Iowa, two sisters-in-law, Anna Brenneman of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, and Mary Kathryn Brenneman of Tampa, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife on December 30, 2009, his parents, a stillborn son, Peter Nathaniel, one sister, Eldora Swartzentruber (Eldon) four brothers-in-law, David Brenneman, Gaylord Brenneman, Evan Brenneman, and Virgil Brenneman, three sisters-in-law, Helen Good Brenneman, Mildred Yoder and Mary Gingerich. Virgil grew up Amish and decided to become a teacher. He had a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in elementary education and a minor in sociology. He taught for three years in Poplar Hill, Canada with the Mennonite mission followed by grade school math in Washington County, Iowa. Later he was a rural letter carrier for the majority of his career. He had a pilot's license, engaged in farming, did some selling, and had interests in alternative medicine and saving energy. He was a member of The Living Word Fellowship in Kalona, Iowa. He will be missed. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at te Fairview Mennonite Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
