Vernelda McCabe

Vernelda E. McCabe, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin after 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27th at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, 709 E. Mapleleaf Drive, Mt. Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 28th at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Herb Shafer officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Memorials have been established First United Methodist Church, Pleasant Hill Cemetery, and Great River Hospice. Born on July 12, 1919, at the family home near Wayland, IA, Vernelda Elizabeth was the daughter of Herman and Velma C. (Koch) Egli. She attended rural school and was a 1937 graduate of Wayland High School. Following graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College, taught in Henry County rural schools, and later did substitute teaching in Mt. Pleasant and New London. On February 21, 1942, she married Harold H. McCabe at the Green Mound Church of God. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1992. Vernelda was a constant helpmate to her husband in the production of crops and livestock. She was always a caregiver to her family, close friends and neighbors and to those with illnesses. Vernelda was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible School, and was active in the United Methodist Women. She was a recipient of the Mission Recognition Award from the church. Along with her husband, she sponsored youth groups and holiday programs. Vernelda was also a member of Chapter DD of T.T.T. Survivors include a son, Richard (Joanne) McCabe of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a daughter, Mary (Herb) Glazier of St. Louis, MO; three grandsons, Lincoln (Denise) McCabe, Matthew (Jen) McCabe and John McCabe; and three great-grandchildren, Avery, Liam, and Madyx McCabe. Also surviving is a sister, Veda Bates of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a brother, Virgil Egli of Kansas City, MO; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Velta Egli; and a brother, Verle Egli.
