Verlenia Ora Tippie Popham, age 95, of North English, passed away on Monday, March 23, At the English Valley Care Center in North English. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 28, 2009 with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 PM to 7 PM on Friday, March 27, 2009. Burial will be in the Champion Hill Cemetery near North English. A memorial fund has been established for the English Valley Care Center. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. Verlenia was born on December 3, 1913 in Paola, Kansas, the daughter of Wesley Oren and Viola Jane DeLozier Tippie. When she was a week old she moved with her family to North English, Iowa. Verlenia lived her entire nine-five years in the Williamsburg, Parnell, North English and South English areas. She married Willard Melvin Popham on December 14th, 1931, in Williamsburg, Iowa. Willard passed away in October 1987. Verlenia was a naturalist, enjoying gardening and working outdoors. She especially appreciated planting flowers and sharing them with her neighbors and friends. Verlenia was a member of the Champion Hill United Methodist Church She was a Avon Representative for over 20 years. In recent years, interests included playing cards and attending the Iowa Hawkeye boys basketball games in Iowa City. She thoroughly enjoyed visits from family and friends. Verlenia became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in November 2003. She is survived by her children: Gene Popham (Darlene) of Scottsdale, AZ; James Popham (Kris) of Pewaukee, WI; Julie Gilbertson (Dennis) of LaPorte City, IA; Terry Popham (Rosemary) of Crescent City, IL; Susie Summers of Davenport, IA; A son-in-law Larry Kirkpatrick of North English, IA; 24 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren; sisters Rita Posey of Brownsville, TX and Maxine Kraske of Tulsa, OK. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband , a daughter Betty Kirkpatrick, grandchildren Timothy Burlingham, Rodney Popham and Jodi Kirkpatrick, a brother Arnold Tippie, and a sister Violet Hagen.
