Verle E. Brubaker was born on March 11, 1923, near South English, IA the son of Oscar David and Alma Fern Brower Brubaker. He grew up in the South English area and graduated from South English High School in 1940. Following graduation he helped his father in the livestock trucking business. Verle served in the US Army in the European Theater during World War II. Following his service to his country, he purchased a semi and entered the trucking business with his father. Verle married Bernice Maxine Hervey on January 16, 1952 at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, IA. They made their home in South English. Verle had been a member of the English River Church of the Brethren since 1934. He hauled livestock for farmers locally and often drove to Chicago. He then would bring steel back out of Gary, IN for John Deere and other factories. Later on, he leased his semi tractor to Heartland Express and traveled all over the United States. Bernice preceded him in death in June 2004. Verle became a resident of Manor House in Sigourney in December 2005. He died there following a short illness on Sunday, July 6, 2008. He lived 85 years, 3 months and 25 days. Verle is survived by a daughter Connie (Jim) Scanlon of South English, IA; a son Ron (Stephene Wright) Brubaker of Sigourney, IA; five grandsons: Benjamin, Daniel & Travis Brubaker and Spencer & Brett Wright all of Sigourney; sisters Jean Carter of Williamsburg, IA and JoAnn (Ed) Sturgeon of Marion, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in June 2004. A Celebration Of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with the Rev. John Hembry officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the South English Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the funeral home.
