Williamsburg-Verla Luree Carney was born October 20, 1910 in Frankfort, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas and Nora Cole Septer. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1929. Verla taught in rural school until she was united in marriage to Patrick Carney November 26, 1930 in Iowa City, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Millersburg until 1961 when they moved to Williamsburg. Verla has worked at Little Chicago, Williamsburg Care Center and the residents halls in Iowa City. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Foresters and a charter member of the R.S.V.P. club. Verla became a resident at Hillside Estates near Williamsburg in January of 2002 and then Rose Haven Nursing Home since May of 2004. Verla was very grateful of the quality care she received at both facilities. Verla died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo after a brief illness at the age of 93 years. She is survived by a daughter: Luree (Paul) Riha of Vining, Iowa; three sons: Gerald (Joyce) Carney of Ames, Iowa, Melvin (Barbara) Carney of Shawnee, Kansas and Michael Carney of Apache Junction, Arizona; a daughter-in-law: Janice Carney Olson of South Amana, Iowa; 18 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Special friends: Edna Teggatz and J.R. and Bev Munnik. Verla was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1988; three sons: Patrick Jr., James and LuVerne Carney; a grandson: Monte Riha; a sister: Frances Septer and a brother: Oliver Septer and a grandson-in-law: Charles Sandersfeld. There will be a rosary at 3:00 p.m. Friday and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Memorial are for the St. Mary's Catholic Church or the Hospice of Compassion for Iowa County.
