Verda Nelson

Verda A. Nelson, 93, died Monday, February 1, 2010, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living facility in Mt. Pleasant with family at her side. Funeral service will be at the Olson-Powell Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 2 P M with a visitation hour at 1 to 2 P M preceding the service. Interment will be at the Old Stone Cemetery southwest of Mediapolis. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa and to the Red Cross' fund for the Haitian Relief effort. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com She was born Verda Agnes Aubrecht, daughter of Frank and Bessie (Yocum) Aubrecht at River Junction, Iowa, on October 16, 1916. Verda married Delbert I. Nelson on October 31, 1934. They rented a farm near Lone Tree, Iowa before buying a farm at Hills, Iowa in 1939, where three of their four children were born. In 1947, they bought a farm five miles west of Mt. Pleasant where their fourth child was born. In 1953, they bought another farm two miles east of Mt. Pleasant and moved there, where they lived until moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1999. Verda and Delbert celebrated 70 years of marriage prior to his death in 2005. Verda loved spending time in her garden and growing flowers. She was loved by all of her family. Survivors include a son, James (Barbara) of Sonoma, California; three daughters, Jackie Wagler of Omaha, Nebraska, Sondra (Lynn) Cochran of Mt. Pleasant, and Nancy (Mark) Staal of Andover, Kansas; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delbert "Dick" Nelson; two sisters, Zetta Burgess and Leora Drake; a brother Leland Aubrecht; and by a son-in-law Willis Wagler.
