Verda M. Boley, 99, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, formerly of Hillsboro, IA, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Hillsboro Baptist Church, in Hillsboro, IA with Chaplain Gordon Hawkins officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Hillsboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts of love and friendship be given to Hillsboro Baptist Church or Hillsboro Fire Department. Born on December 15, 1920, at home in Hillsboro, Verda M. was the daughter of Moran M. and Elsie (Hammons) Doan. She played basketball for the Hillsboro High School Huskies, and her freshman year played in the 1935 state basketball tournament. She was a 1939 graduate of Hillsboro High School. She continued her education and graduated from Parsons College with a teaching certificate. Verda married her high school sweetheart, Dale Dodds Boley on January 17, 1942, in Lancaster, MO. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1993.
Teaching school for a few years at Horn Country School, which was close by, Verda and Dale raised their two children, Theresa and David, on the family farm southwest of Hillsboro.
A member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church, Verda taught Sunday school and loved taking her grandkids and neighbor kids to church and Sunday school. She was a member of Stockport Chapter #544 Order of the Eastern Star. Taking family vacations out west, Estes Park, CO, was Verdas favorite destination. Not only did she love taking care of her family, she also enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, and oil painting.
Verda is survived by a daughter, Theresa Robinson of Loveland, CO; a son, David (Sandy) Boley of Hillsboro, IA; and a brother, DT Doan of Des Moines, IA. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Brian (Susan) Boley, Rick (Heather) Boley, Christopher Boley, Veronica Oneil, and Laura Robinson; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
Along with her loving husband, Verda was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, M.M. Doan, Jr.; and two sisters-in-law, Wilma Doan and Barbara Doan.
