Vera Lucille Yoder was born June 26, 1924 in rural Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Barbara (Miller) Bender. On May 14, 1971 Vera was united in marriage to Roy L. Yoder in Wellman. Vera was a quilter, she pieced, marked and quilted for many years. She was an active member of the West Union Mennonite Church and WMSC. She also volunteered at Crowded Closet in Iowa City, and the Lifeline in Wellman. When she retired to Wellman, she was known for opening her home to many people and serving delicious food, including renting her basement to people in need of temporary housing. She also marked and quilted hundreds of quilts for other people. Vera passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 92 years.
Vera is survived by 2 step sons: Dean (Velma) Yoder of Warsaw, Missouri, Daniel Keith (Shirley) Yoder of Wellman, a step daughter: Ruth (John Mark) King of Wellman; 38 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; a sister: Mary Miller of Glendale, Arizona, and a brother Daniel Bender of Harrisonburg, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy, 2 brothers: Clarence Bender, Paul Bender, and 2 sisters: Nina Yoder and Gladys Fisher.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell. Pastor Corey Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7 PM on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for Mennonite Central Committee. The Powell Funeral Home in Wellman is caring for Vera and her family.
