Williamsburg- Vera Arlene Brockshus was born September 13, 1922 in Conroy, Iowa, the daughter of John R. and Florence (Olson) Leahy. She graduated in 1940 from Hilton Consolidated High School in Conroy. Vera was united in marriage to Arnold Brockshus on December 24, 1941 in Macon, Missouri. The couple made their home on the family farm east of Williamsburg. Vera and Arnold worked side by side on the farm. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Vera enjoyed quilting, gardening, volunteering at L.I.S., the Crowded Closet in Iowa City and at church. She also was an avid sports fan watching the Chicago Cubs baseball and Iowa Hawkeye basketball. Vera died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at her home with her daughters by her side at the age of 88 years. She is survived by four daughters: Marilyn Curry-Dolder and husband Harry of Oxford, Barbara Fiser of Hiawatha, Doris Sawyer and husband Stephen of LaPlata, MO and Carol Kempf and husband Dennis of Williamsburg; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two sisters: Shirley Schwarting of Williamsburg and Faye Roberts of Cedar Rapids and a brother: Bob Leahy of Cedar Rapids. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arnold in 1984, granddaughter: Josie Fiser, grandson: Sam Curry, son-in-law: David Curry, two brothers: Carroll Leahy and an infant Dean Leahy, three sisters: Cleone Sandersfeld, Marjorie Zuber and Ethel Roberts. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
