Velma Irene Byczek, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit. Visitation for Mrs. Byczek will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2006, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening at the church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery of Mt. Pleasant. Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church and the American Lung Association. The Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant is in charge of arrangements. Born June 11, 1917, in Mt. Union, IA, Velma was the daughter of Guy L. and Nettie Peterson Anderson. She was a 1934 graduate of Pleasant Lawn High School. On November 16, 1962, she married Ivan D. Byczek. He preceded her in death on February 12, 2001. Prior to her marriage, Velma was employed at Princess Candy Kitchen, Hoaglin's Department Store, and Brown Lynch Scott in Mt. Pleasant. Following her marriage, she worked along side her husband on the family farm. Velma was a former member of the Mt. Pleasant Crystal Rebekah Lodge #45 and Glasgow Dorcas Society. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. She enjoyed birds, sewing, and making quilts. She also enjoyed entertaining her friends. Mrs. Byczek is survived by two step-sons, Robert Byczek and his wife Kate of Mt. Union, IA and James Byczek and his wife Marilee of Fairfield, IA; one step-daughter Mary and her husband Leon Wittmer of Maple Grove, MN; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren. She is also survived by one niece Phyllis McCulley of Burlington, IA and three great nieces. Along with her husband, Mrs. Byczek was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Dale Anderson.
