Thomas Bates Roberts

Thomas B. Roberts, 79, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, exited this world on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 4:25 a.m. at his home, and entered the gates of heaven to hear the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 24th at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Faith Christian Outreach Church with Pastors Monte Knudsen and Dennis Thomas officiating. Memorials may be given to Faith Christian Outreach Church or the Grandview Church of Quincy in his memory. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com.Born February 10, 1938, in Keosauqua, IA, Thomas Bates was the son of Melbourne Wyatt and Sophia Mae (Bartholomew) Roberts. He was a graduate of Farmington High School in Farmington, IA and Iowa Wesleyan College, where he received a degree in accounting. Tom served in the United States Army, having been stationed in the United States and Germany.On July 19, 1961, he married Johan Marjorie Brown at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove, IA. Tom and Johan devoted their lives to their daughters, as well as providing a loving, stable home to scores of foster children. Tom worked for several agriculture related businesses in accounting. He was employed by G and F Farms and retired from the Iowa Department of Corrections. His real fulfillment came from his church and volunteer activities, as he did all that the Lord commanded him and he left nothing undone. After his retirement, he served the Lord as the Care Pastor at Faith Christian Outreach Church in Mt. Pleasant. His devotion to and firm belief in Christ, ultimately gave him peace. Along with his loving wife, Johan of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Tom is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Dennis) Thomas of Quincy, IL and Judith (Richard) Hand of Ft. Madison, IA; four grandchildren, Joshua (Shaloma) Thomas of Bethel, MO, Zachary (Caitlin) Thomas of Quincy, IL, Katie (Logan) Hesser of Wayland, IA and Kallie Anderson of Winfield, IA; five great-grandsons, Parker, Jacob, Isaiah, Samuel and Kellan; and a brother, Melbourne (Helen) Roberts of Ankeny, IA.Tom was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Delbert Roberts.
