NORTH ENGLISH-Thelma Hazel Walter was born on August 17, 1921, in rural Marengo, to Merton Otto and Mollie Hazel (Shelton) Hinder. She grew up in rural Victor and graduated from Williamsburg High School. On February 14, 1941 she married William David Walter in Williamsburg. They lived on a farm in the Williamsburg area until moving to North English in 1951. Thelma and Bill owned and operated the DX Station for a number of years, where she did the bookkeeping. They also owned Walter Construction along with son Gene. Thelma was also a clerk in the Variety Store for 23 years, provided janitorial services for the North English United Methodist Church and was assistant manager at the North English Thrift Shop. She was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, served on the Board and was President of the U.M.W. Thelma also volunteered at the North English Thrift Shop. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, making handmade gifts for family and going fishing in Minnesota. Thelma died Friday, September 11, 2009, at the English Valley Care Center in North English, at the age of 88 years and 26 days. Survivors include two sons: Jerry Walter and wife Geri of Cedar Rapids and Gene Walter and wife Jane of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great grandsons; eight step great granddaughters and one step great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: William; two sisters: Lois Carney and Ruth Hinder in infancy and two brothers: Otto Hinder and Dale Hinder in infancy. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, at the North English United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2009, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. A memorial fund has been established for the North English United Methodist Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English is handling the arrangements.
