MOUNT PLEASANT – Stanley, W. Ross, 80, of Fort Madison formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Parkview Manor in Wellman.
Stanley was born March 7, 1942, in Mount Union, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Lois (Harned) Ross. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and attended Burlington Business School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On June 14, 1969, he married Erma Bush, they later divorced. Stanley was a devoted employee of Metro Mail for 43 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in many capacities.
While in high school he worked part time at Benner’s Food Store and a year at Burlington’s first Hy-Vee. He helped his older brother sell garden seeds, Gritt newspaper and TV Guides, while growing up on the farm. Stanley and his wife had a period of selling Amway products. In his early years he built many plastic model cars and aircraft. Then the Lionel trains led to H O and N scale trains and equipment. He loved watching Nascar races and playing board games.
Stanley is survived by a son James Ross of Mount Pleasant; sister Janet (Bill) Tema of Kalamazoo, Michigan; brother Richard Ross of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren, Haleigh Gonzalez of Ottumwa, Jacey Ross and Doug Ross of Mount Pleasant; five great grandchildren; two nephews, Bryan Tema of Augusta, Michigan, and Joe Harbin of Lockridge; and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Milford Ross; sister Marilyn Koch; and two nieces Cindy Wixom and Toni Johnson.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 1-7 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the First Baptist Church and Washington County Hospice.
