OMAHA- Sister Madeline Mary Greiner, age 94, died on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Sister Madeline Mary Greiner was born on November 25, 1922 in Harper, Iowa. She was the daughter of Robert Frank & Rosa Frances (Adam) Greiner. Madeline had a normal, happy childhood. She attended grade school at St. Mary's School in Keota, Iowa which was four miles from home. Madeline attended St. Joseph's High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she graduated in 1940. She entered the School Sisters of St. Francis in June of that year and took her first vows in June of 1942. She received her religious name of Odilia which was changed back to Madeline in 1968. In 1944, Madeline taught for one year in Charlesburg, Wisconsin before graduating from Alverno College in Milwaukee in 1945. She made her final vows in June 1948.
Sister Madeline Mary had a life of very successful teaching. She served in many schools over the years. In addition to her teaching, she served on the parish council, was an Area Coordinator for her community, a Cooperating teacher for the training of new teachers and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. After her retirement from teaching in 1993, she still kept busy substitute teaching, tutoring, and visiting the sick.
Madeline loved teaching and being a School Sister of St. Francis. She is remembered for her love of her community, her closeness to her family, her love and care of the children she taught, and the love, care and support she provided to the sick and poor throughout her life of ministry.
She is survived by two sisters Marie (Norbert) Hammes of Fairfield and Dorothy Weber of Washington; a brother Robert (Frances) Greiner of Washington; a sister-in-law Kathryn Greiner of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents; a brother Edward Greiner; a sister Marjorie McMains; two brothers-in-law Robert McMains and Luke Weber; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Holy Trinity Parish- St. Mary Catholic Church, Keota. Fr. Charles Fladung will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Keota. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 31 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. with a wake service at 3:00 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home, Keota.
