Shirley H. Benge, 77, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, January 2, 2016, at Henry County Health Center Emergency Room.Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jim Hughes officiating. Following the service cremation will be accorded. Inurnment of Shirley and her husband, "Dillon", will be at a later date in Oakland Mills Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Lincoln Street Baptist Church. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born on September 12, 1938, in Iowa City, IA, Shirley Hughlene was the daughter of Raymond Edward and Frances Hughlene Wright Puffinbarger. She was educated in the Fairfield School District. On May 8, 1954, she married Lloyd "Dillon" Benge in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on December 22, 2013. While living most of her life in southeast Iowa, Shirley lived in Muscatine, IA, for a short time while her father was in World War II. Shirley's priority was her family and being a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Shirley worked for Metromail for 13 years, followed by the Henry County Home and Pleasant Manor Care Center. She worked in the Iowa Wesleyan College kitchen for 13 years prior to her retirement. Shirley was a faithful member of Lincoln Street Baptist Church. Shirley is survived by three sons, Randy (Maggie) Benge of Ankeny, IA, Brian (Loyce) Benge of Knoxville, IA, and Rusty (Laura) Benge of Baxter, IA; nine grandchildren, Adam Benge, Alex Benge, Ann Bockenstedt, Cody Benge, Jesse Benge, Stephanie Benge, Justin Benge, Nolan Benge, and Molly McGovern; two nieces, Jolene Beauchamp and April Riley; and two nephews, Shawn Puffinbarger and Shane Puffinbarger. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren. Along with her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; a stillborn son, Bruce Benge; and a brother, Donald E. Puffinbarger.
