Selma Simmons, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mt. Pleasant. An open visitation will be held Monday, May 21, 2012 from 12 noon until 7 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 22nd from 10-11:00 a.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Chapel with The Reverend Joseph Phung officiating. Interment will be at the Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been established to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Born November 22, 1924 in Mt. Pleasant, IA, Selma Louise was the daughter of Iliff and Flossie (Ford) King. She was a 1942 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. She then enrolled at the Burlington School of Business from which she graduated. On April 11, 1945 she was united in marriage to Wayne Thomas Simmons. He preceded her in death on October 25, 2007. Selma worked for her father at Swift Company in Mt. Pleasant. During WWII she worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Des Moines. After the war she worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant where she was the secretary to the plant manager, Brigadier General Holmes. In 1961 she was employed by the Iowa Illinois Telephone Company in Mt. Pleasant as a service representative. She retired in 1982 after 22 years of service. Selma enjoyed taking pictures of her family and spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed vacationing with family members to Florida. Selma was an avid golfer and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Golf Country Club and the Winfield Golf Country Club. She was a past member of the Bethlehem Chapter #38 Order of Eastern Star in Mt. Pleasant and the Business Women's Club in Burlington. Survivors include a son, Dennis (Suzanne) Simmons of Moline, IL; a daughter, Mary (Phil) Hassenfritz of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Matthew (Patricia) Simmons of Menomonee Falls, WI, Ryan (Marci) Simmons of Hummelstown, PA and Christine (Steve) Hassenfritz Toft of Davenport, IA; five great-grandchildren, Catherine, Joseph, Ashley, Jacob and Cameron. Also surviving are two brothers, Wayne (Loree) King of Mt. Pleasant and Richard King of Ankeny, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wayne; and three brothers, Robert, Edward and Ray King.
