Sarah Elizabeth Watson was born on January 8, 1910, near Garden Grove, IA, the daughter of Elbert R. and Sarah Jane Jones White. She grew up in the Garden Grove community, graduating form Garden Grove High School. Elizabeth received her B.A. from Simpson College, her M.A. from the University of Colorado, and her Doctorate from the University of Denver. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Harold Francis Watson at the Methodist Church in Fayetteville, AK, on June 22, 1969. Harold preceded her in death in July 1975. Elizabeth taught in high schools for 10 years and 26 years at the college level. Elizabeth taught 9 years at Morningside College in Sioux City, IA, 15 years at Simpson College in Indianola, IA, and 2 years at the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK. She was a member of the North English United Methodist Church where she was active in the UMW, a member of American Association of University Women for many years, a member and former president of the P.E.O., a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and she was a member of Iowa Governor Hughes first Commission on the Status of Women. Elizabeth died on May 23, 2006, at the Longview Home in Missouri Valley, IA, after a long illness. She lived 96 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Elizabeth is survived by stepsons: Robert Watson of TX, and Stuart Watson of ,CA; 4 step grandchildren; sisters Evelyn Van Rossum of Shenandoah, IA, and Mary Frye of Moberly, MO; a brother Allen White of North English, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Phillip, Kenneth, & Stanley White and sister Alice Knipfer. A celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2006 at 1:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home in North English, IA, with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until service time at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.
