Ruth Marie Eash was born on May 4, 1931 in Long Branch, NJ, a daughter of Godfrey and Magdalene Higgs Olson. Ruth graduated from Red Bank High School in Red Bank, NJ, and then continued her formal education at Bucknell College and Columbia School of Nursing. She worked in Public Health in Harlem, NY for several years. Ruth was united in marriage to George Edward Eash on December 29, 1956 in Red Bank, NJ. They made their home in Wellman. Ruth worked as Director of Nursing at Pleasantview Home in Kalona and later as a staff nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals Clinics in Iowa City. Ruth was a member of the United Christian & Baptist Church in Kalona, the Wellman Garden Club and the Embroidery Club. Volunteering was essential to Ruth's life. She volunteered at the Wellman Public Library, the Wellman Elementary School, the Kalona Food Pantry, at Iowa City Headstart and in 2009,went on a medical mission trip to Haiti. Ruth enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She died following a short battle with cancer on Monday, September 6, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She lived 79 years, 4 months and 3 days. Ruth is survived by a daughter Maggie (Kevin) Keyser of Iowa City, IA and a son Matthew (Rebecca) Eash of Oconomowoc, WI; four grandchildren: Jay & Jeff Keyser and Laura & Karen Eash. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George in December 2006, and a sister Norma Cosentino. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the United Christian & Baptist Church in Kalona with the Rev. John McKinstry officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on October 9th. Burial will be in the Wassonville Cemetery, Wellman, IA. The Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to UCBC Haiti Fund (United Christian & Baptist Church) or the Wellman Scofield Public Library. Messages and tributes may be left at powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
