Ruth A. Hull

Williamsburg- Ruth Arlene (Gay) Hull was born January 7, 1922, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Lillian Margaret (Overpeck) Nelson.  She grew up in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School.  Ruth was united in marriage to Virgil Gay on April 11, 1942.   To this union they were blessed with five children.  Virgil died in November of 1991.  Ruth later married Kenneth Hull.   She taught piano lessons and played piano at the church from the age of 12-80 years old. She often entertained residents at Highland Ridge, playing the piano till age 99.  She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, volunteering at church, playing the massive pipe organ for Sunday services.  

Some of her favorite sayings were: Bless your angel heart., Every day is a good day I don’t have time for bad days and charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it, I don’t worry, God is in control.                                                 

Ruth passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 100 years.

She is survived by three children, Don (Mary Jo) Gay of Gladstone, MO, Jean (Don) Hollaway of Kansas City, MO and Andy (Maureen) Gay of Des Moines; daughter-in-law Sandy Gay and 10 grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, son Brian, a daughter Julie, and sister Darlene. Grandsons Luke Edmonson and Clint Edmonson.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Monday, June 6, 2022 at the Parkview Church in Iowa City.  Visitation will be Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 at the church.  Burial will be in the Ottumwa Cemetery.
