Russell Grant Daines, Sr., age 88, of South English, formerly of La Farge, Wisconsin, died Friday, November 9, 2007, at the English Valley Care Center in North English, following a brief illness. Russell was born September 4, 1919, in Vernon County, Wisconsin, to Bernard and Ona (Dyer) Daines and graduated from Hillsboro, Wisconsin High School in 1939. He served in the United States Navy for five years in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. On January 4, 1943, he married Mary Jean Brokaw in Seattle, Washington. The couple lived in Los Angeles, California and La Farge, Wisconsin, where Russell farmed and worked as a journeyman plumber. Mary Jean preceded him in death in 1994 and for the last 12 years he has lived in South English with his special friend and companion, Helen Johnston. Survivors include three sons: Michael Daines, Russell Daines II and Steven Daines; one daughter: Mary Ann Bennett; 13 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; one brother: Gyke "Denny" Daines; companion: Helen Johnston and her family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother: Duane Daines. A service of remembrance will be held at Valley Wesleyan Church in Valley, Wisconsin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2007. Burial will be at Valley Cemetery in Valley, Wisconsin.
