Russell B. Schaffner was born on March 18, 1929, north of Millersburg, Iowa, a son of Lloyd Everet and Aura Sophia Smith Schaffner. He attended rural Rose Hill School and graduated from Millersburg High School. Russell was united in marriage to Betty Marie Himler on January 11, 1951. They farmed near Millersburg and Deep River. Russell loved fishing, farming, trapping, gardening and square-dancing. He became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in January 2008. Russell died at the Care Center on Friday, April 16, 2010, at the age of 81 years and 21 days. He is survived by his wife Betty of rural Deep River, IA; seven children: Gary (Marnita) Schaffner of North English, IA; Patricia (Arlen) Fisher of North English, IA; Stephen Schaffner of North English, IA; Charlene Oehl of Millersburg, IA; Mary (Bryan) Greene of North English, IA; David Schaffner of Deep River, IA; Deborah (David) Grimm of Williamsburg, IA; 21 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a brother Richard (Bonnie) Schaffner of Millersburg, IA; and an aunt Phyllis Smith of Deep River, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great granddaughter Joely Schaffner. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 :00 AM on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Bryan Greene and Carol Dale officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, April 18, 2010, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, rural Williamsburg.
