Ruby Lois Jungjohan was born April 16, 1914 in North English, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin Hugh and Effa M. Carmichael Butler. She graduated from North English High School in 1932, then taught school in Iowa and Keokuk Counties until her marriage to Emmet John Jungjohan of Preston, Iowa. The couple moved to Moline, IL where Emmet worked for John Deere and Ruby worked part time with the Moline School System. Eventually Ruby became full-time secretary for the Swedish Olive Insurance Company. She was active in the First Christian Church of Moline and held numerous leadership positions in the Moline chapter of the Royal Neighbors fraternal organization, as well as being active with the Republican Women and the General Federated Women's Club. Ruby enjoyed almost every form of needlework, she also loved to entertain friends and family and keeping in touch with her seven brothers and sisters and their families. Upon Emmet's retirement in 1974, the couple purchased and restored the Butler family home and moved back to North English, where both became very active in the Community Center and in area-wide volunteer programs benefitting older Iowans. Emmet died in 1985, after which Ruby fulfilled his term as Iowa County delegate to the Older Iowans Legislature, later being elected herself for three terms, as well as being a member of the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs State Advisory Council. She was also active in the VFW Auxiliary. As an advocate for the aging Ruby served many years as Community Center president, working with the Heritage Agency Task Force on Aging to create a Well Elderly Clinic for Iowa County, Iowa County Commission member for the Hawkeye Community Action Program, representative for Iowa County Health Advisory Board for the North English area. She distinguished herself for leadership and dedicated voluntary community involvement, receiving the Governor's Volunteer award in 1986 and the Iowa Methodist "Success After 60 award in 1990, followed by recognition as the 1991 Outstanding Senior Citizen of Area Ten. She was a member of the North English Christian Church. Ruby died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Denton Rehabilitation and nursing Center in Denton, Texas after a brief illness at the age of 90 years. She is survived by her son: Gerald and wife Barbara Jungjohan of Denton, Texas; a granddaughter: Elizabeth and husband Cliff Parrish of Bedford; two brothers: Ellsworth and wife Ruth Butler of Castle Rock, CO and Kenneth Butler of Des Moines, Iowa. Also surviving are seven nephews and eleven nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband four brothers and a sister. Memorial service will be Friday, July 16, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. North English Christian Church in North English. Rev. Don Ridenour will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour before service time at the church. Burial will be in the Lutton Cemetery near North English. Powell Funeral Home in North English are caring for services.
