Roy Lewis

Roy E. Lewis, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, January 27, 2012, at Arbor Court. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, January 31st at 1:00 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Jerry VanHooser of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Born April 12, 1914, in Meredosia, IL, Roy was the son of Harry and Avis "Lela" (Sheppard) Lewis. Roy was a graduate of the Denmark Academy. He married Martha Asborn. The couple later divorced. He married Lucille Ford, who preceded him in death. He then married Donna Kerwood, who also preceded him in death. Roy began working for his brothers in the Lewis Brothers Construction Company in Green Rock, IL. Later he was self employed as a carpenter and contractor in Illinois and Iowa. While living in Mt. Pleasant, he worked for an auto body garage. He retired from Motorola after working many years as an inspector for the company. Roy had many interests. He invested a great deal of time as a Hamm radio operator. He was a meticulous gardener and spent long hours working in his yard. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed favorite fishing spots at Oakland Mills. Roy enjoyed traveling, especially on trips taken to Oklahoma to visit family members. Survivors include three daughters, Carol Ownbey of Cedar Rapids, IA, Joyce Anderson of Swaledale, IA, and Helen Nix of Georgia; two sons, Glenn Lewis of Iowa and Alan Lewis of South Dakota; a brother, Dean Lewis of Annawan, IL; a sister, June Hamilton of Urbana, IL; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Roy was preceded in death by his wives; a son, Freddie Lewis; two brothers, Sherley Lewis and Harry Lewis; and by two sisters, Dorothy Phelps and Verna Johnson.
