Roy K. "Jack" Long, 94, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, died on Saturday, January 2, 2016 in Sarasota, Florida. Mr. Long's body has been cremated. A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Mt. Pleasant. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. "Jack" was born March 31, 1921 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army's 348th Engineers Battalion , the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division and the 27th Air Transportation Group. He served as an Army medic during the D-Day invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach and also in Germany. Jack was united in marriage to Alice B. Murray of Fairfield. She preceded him in death in February 2006. Jack moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1963. He was employed as a Postal Clerk at the Main Post Office in Sarasota for 37 years until his retirement in December of 1997. A very active musician, Jack continued to play his guitar with his friends in a band called, "The Troubadors" and spend time with his family and friends. Survivors include his three children, Sharon Long and Garry Long of Sarasota, Florida, and Stan Long of Crestview, Florida. Also surviving is a grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Alice.
