Roger C. Miller was born November 22, 1929 in Struttgart, Arkansas, the son of Thomas and Ruth (Brenneman) Miller. He graduated from Kalona High School in 1948 and then attended the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan College. On August 5, 1951 he was united in marriage to Wanda Rhodes at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. They made their home in the Kalona community. Roger taught elementary school, managed the Farmers Feed Mill in Kalona, and worked for the University of Iowa transportation Department. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. His joys were playing golf, Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, reading and his grandchildren. Roger died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at his home in rural Kalona at the age of 81 years. Roger is survived by his wife Wanda of Kalona; three children - Rebecca J. Carlson (Richard) of Longmont, CO; Matthew L. Miller of Riverside; Michael D. Miller of Kalona ; two grandchildren - Douglas Carlson of Boston, Massachusetts; Rachel Miller of Riverside; two brothers - H. Lynn Miller (Mertice) of Wellman; Ned P. Miller (Maggie) of Des Moines; and two sisters - Nedra Schrock (Leo) of Kalona; and Jean Thomas of Lancaster, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, a niece, and two great nieces. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. Pastor Robert Smith and Pastor Margaret Richer Smith will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the South Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the Church. A memorial fund has been established for Kalona First Responders. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
