Williamsburg- Roger Allen Herring was born February 16, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Alexander & Minnie (Conklin) Herring. He grew up in West Liberty and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1957. On November 26, 1960, he married Marylene Wardenburg in Boonsville, MO, and moved to Iowa County where they raised their family. They loved each other faithfully for 43 years until her passing in 2003. Roger then married Sharon Houser, and they later divorced. Roger was employed several years for Farm Service and then did carpenter work for Swartzendruber Lumber. He worked over 25 years as an over-the-road truck driver for R.H. Hummer, Jr. Trucking out of Williamsburg. He loved trucking and his trucking family and enjoyed sharing stories of his travels. Roger liked woodworking, building things and playing cards (especially sheepshead), but his passion was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities and events. Each of them brought a special light to his life. Roger died on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 74 years. He is survived by his children: Darryl (Leslie) Herring of Hendersonville, TN, Michael (Tina) Herring of Palo and Carmen (Denny) Van Dee of Williamsburg; 4 grandchildren: Alex & Andrew Gragg and Grace & Olivia Herring; 5 step grandchildren: Niki (Vince) Martinson, Whitney & Chase Van Dee and Zachary & Nick Valdez; 1 step great grandchild: Clayton Martinson. He was preceded by his parents; wife Marylene; an infant brother; and 2 sisters: Teresa Schwarting and Rosemary Ebel. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Rev. Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg.
