KALONA- Robert "Bob" Becker, was born December 12, 1927, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Vincent and Leona (Lutz) Becker. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by George and Clara Lutz. He was a Cpl in the US Army during the Korean War. On May 25, 1957, he was united in marriage to Mary Irene Flynn, at the St James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. He farmed throughout his lifetime between the Wellman and Keota communities. In August 1999, Bob and Irene moved to Kalona. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellman. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed antique tractors. In the 2004 Wellman parade he placed first in the antique tractors division. Bob died on Friday, October 31, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following complications of a stroke, at the age of 80 years. Bob is survived by his wife Irene of Kalona; 3 daughters- Jean Anne(Brian) Ripley of Webster City, IA, Julie Kay (Tom) Schnerre of East Moline, IL and Debra Sue (Roger) Williams of Cedar Rapids, IA; a son Douglas Robert (Lauri) Becker of Marion, IA; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and a sister Delores Franzen of Washington, IA; He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy and his adopted family George and Clara lutz and Jim Lutz. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellman. Father Rich Adam will officiate. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Kalona, IA.
