KEOTA-Rita E. Vogel, age 88, of Keota, died Friday, November 1, 2013, at her home. Rita was born February 2, 1925, in rural Harper, Iowa, to John B. and Caecilia (Peiffer) Weber and received her education at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School. On September 8, 1948, she married Leon P. Vogel at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota area until moving into Keota in 1984. Rita was a member of Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and formerly sang in the church choir. She was also a member of St. Theresa's Study Club Hopewell Sewing Club, neighbor card club and pepper club. Rita volunteered with Keokuk County Hospice and delivered meals on wheels and enjoyed golfing, sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidering, cooking, baking, taking care of her family and visiting with friends. Survivors include her husband: Leon of Keota; six children: Gary (Emmilee) Vogel of Iowa City, Dan Vogel of Keota, Elaine (Dean) Finley of Winthrop, Maine, Susan (Alan) Byerly of Washington, Patrick (Robyn) Vogel of Keota and Mary Vogel of Keota; one grandson: Chris Vogel and McKenzie of Lone Tree; two brothers: Isidore "Doc" Weber of Kalona and Tony Weber of Washington; two sisters: Martha Kleinmeyer of Iowa City and Celeste Woltering of Keota and special friend: Laura Vogel of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister: Bernardine Conklin and eight brothers: Norbert, Wilfrid, Ed, Mark, Luke, Paul, Cletus and Clare. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 4, 2013, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service followed by a rosary at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Hospice or Holy Trinity Parish.
