Richard Darrell Peterman, 76, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the St. Vincent Carmel Hospital in Carmel, IN. Open visitation will be held Friday, June 10th from 12:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. The family will not be present on Friday. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Calvary Baptist Church. The son of Clem and Alberta (Wells) Peterman, Richard was born April 17, 1935 in Fort Madison. He attended Mt. Pleasant High School and graduated in 1953. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard. He married Mary Lou Dunbar. They later divorced. Richard began his work career at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. He then joined Packers Sanitation Services, Inc. in Mt. Pleasant as a safety director. He transferred to Contract Services Limited in Burlington where he was the Safety Human Resource Manager retiring in 2007. In his retirement years he enjoyed working for Hy-Vee Drugstore. Being outdoors was a favorite pastime for Richard, and he especially enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. Other pastimes included restoring his vehicles, visiting with friends, cooking and participating in chili cook-offs. Richard attended the Calvary Baptist Church. Richard is survived by his best friend and companion, Sondra Hueholt of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three daughters, Tammy (Sheldon) Graber of Des Moines, IA, Becky (Michael) James of Indianapolis, IN, and Cindy (Bob Gagne) Peterman of Olathe, KS; three sons, Rich (Cheryl Fields) Peterman of Leavenworth, KS, Danny (Jeanie) Peterman of Independence, MO, and John (Stacy) Peterman of Mankato, MN; four step-children; thirteen grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul (Barb) Peterman of Ft. Madison, IA; and three sisters, Carol (Adrian) Box of Salem, IA, Phyllis Humphrey and Karen Wright both of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Preceding Richard in death are his parents, and a sister, Jean Fraise.
