MILLERSBURG Richard Leo (Dick) Lacina was born on February 23, 1930, in Iowa City, the son of Clarence and Agatha M. (Palik) Lacina. He attended country schools near North Liberty, Kalona and North English, graduating from North English High School in 1946. Richard married Mary Theresa Berry on June 27, 1953, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Millersburg. Richard worked briefly at Amana Refrigeration, farmed southeast of Millersburg and retired from Kingsbury Homes in Sigourney. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post #521 in Millersburg. He was a member of the Trappers Association and a card carrying member of the NRA. He enjoyed, hunting, trapping, playing cards and writing letters to the editor. He was an avid baseball fan, he was always up for a good joke and he was very proud of his Czech heritage. Richard died on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 26 days. He is survived by his wife Mary Theresa of rural North English; eleven children: Robert (Laura) Lacina of Brooklyn, IA; Kathleen (Timothy) Snyder of Breda, IA; Joan (James) Frazier of South English, IA; Thomas (Julie Snyder) Lacina of Madison Lake, MN; Kenneth Lacina of Marengo, IA; Patricia (Carlos Zapata) Lacina of Cairo, Egypt; Charles (Kelly) Lacina of Faucett, MO; John (Kristyn) Lacina of Iowa City, IA; Carol (Martin) Snyder of Breda, IA; Barbara (Greg Greiner) Lacina of Des Moines; Theresa Lacina of Iowa City; 18 grandchildren, and sister-in-law Loretta and husband Jack White of La Crosse, WI. Richard was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside service will be 10:30 AM on Monday, June 22, 2009, at St. Bernard Cemetery, near Millersburg, with military rites by American Legion Post #521. Visitation will be on Sunday, from 4-8 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A general memorial fund has been established.
