Richard J. Schaffner, age 80, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo. Public graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Sunday, October 16, 2011, in the Millersburg Cemetery, Millersburg, with Pastor Carol Dale officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday, October 15, 2011, from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A general memorial fund has been established. Schaffner was born on October 22, 1930, near Millersburg, Iowa, a son of Lloyd E.and Aura Sophia Smith Schaffner. He graduated from Millersburg High School and was a life-long resident of the Millersburg community. Richard was united in marriage to Bonnie Loretta Grimm on September 9, 1951, at the Zion Church, north of Millersburg. All of his life Richard operated heavy equipment. He saw a great deal of this country for many years from the drivers seat of a semi tractor while driving for Kingsberry Homes and Amana Refrigeration. He enjoyed working at his farm, hunting and fishing, wood working and trips to Tama with his wife Bonnie. He was avid reader, anything about the Civil War or the American Frontier. He was very knowledgeable about the American Indian and loved watching the bald eagles outside of Millersburg along the river bank. Richard is survived by daughter Janet (Terry) Morse of Williamsburg; son Roger (Annette) Schaffner of Millersburg; daughter Penny (Doug) Wood of Ottumwa; son Brett (Pauline) Schaffner of Manchester; grandchildren: Christine Kolstee (Paul Monroe) , Cathy Greiner (Isaac McMullen); Caleb (Jessie) Schaffner, Jacob Schaffner (Shelby Kahler); Josh (Kacie) Wood, Matt (Cheryl) Wood, Josh and Jacob Tri; great grandchildren: Kyle Greiner (Sykala Sadler), Scott and Sadie Greiner; Marissa Kolstee and Brayden Monroe: sisters-in-law Betty Schaffner, Mary Grimm and Vonda Netser. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bonnnie, and a brother Russell Schaffner.
