Richard Hendricks, 62, of Salem, IA, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Visitation will begin after 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 3, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel with Pastor Brian Swafford officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. A general memorial has been established in his memory. Born September 27, 1946, in Fairfield, IA, Richard Wayne was the son of Roscoe and Thelma B. Messer Hendricks. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1964. On January, 24, 1991, Richard married Patricia A. (Rich) Smyth in Mt. Pleasant. She survives. Richard served in the Iowa National Guard with the Alpha Company 224th Engineers of Burlington, IA. He retired as Captain after 26 years of service. He worked at the Mt. Pleasant Department of Corrections in the maintenance department for 23 years. Richard enjoyed camping at Keppyville, fishing, garden tilling, NASCAR and sprint car racing and raising miniature horses. He also liked to travel and always enjoyed helping neighbors and friends. Along with his wife, Pat, he is survived by his mother, Thelma Ridinger of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two daughters, Michelle (Jody) McBeth of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Susan (Dennis) Carter of New London, IA; four sons, Chad (Shelly) Hendricks of Mt. Pleasant, IA, John (Wende) Smyth of Mt. Union, IA, Michael (Beth) Smyth of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and David Smyth of Ashville, NC, along with one son of the heart Jesse (Kasi) Howard of New London, IA. Also surviving is one brother, Robert (Judy) Hendricks of Tulsa, OK, and one sister Phyllis Moore of OR; one sister-in-law, Rose Hendricks of Fairfield, IA; thirteen grandchildren, one aunt, one uncle, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Richard was preceded in death by a son, Shawn Hendricks; his father Roscoe, step father Leonard Ridinger, and one brother, Roxie Hendricks.
