Richard Hagen

August 1, 1930 — October 28, 2018

Homestead-Richard Henry Hagen Sr. was born August 1, 1930 on the family farm south of Homestead, the son of Martin George and Hilda Louisa Adelina (Schwarting) Hagen. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1948. Richard was inducted in the U.S. Army on January 16, 1952 and received his training in Ft. Riley, Kansas. He was united in marriage to Lillian Roemig on May 24, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. After their marriage Richard was sent to Germany in June of 1952. Lillian joined him in May of 1953, they lived with Hilda and Herbert Durst for 6 months. While they were in Germany they traveled a lot in Europe. Richard was discharged in December of 1953. They returned home and Richard started farming with his father and brother Kenneth in 1954. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served as the chairman, secretary, treasurer and elder. He sang in the Amana Young Men's Bureau Chorus and the men's choir at church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling to visit their children and going to his children and grandchildren's activities. Richard passed away Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 88.

He is survived by his wife Lillian; five children, Richard (Joyce) Hagen Jr. of Delhi, Patricia (Gary) Coleman of Iowa City, Blake Hagen of West Burlington, Scott (Denise DeLorme) Hagen of Baton Rouge, LA and Shelly Blaylock of Tiffin; five grandchildren, Mitchell (Jess) Coleman, Collin (Cliff) Simmons, Hanna Hagen, Casey Blaylock and Nick Hagen; four great grandchildren, Emily, Christopher, Juniper and Oscar; a brother, Kenneth (Pat) Hagen of Homestead and a sister, Doris Heitman of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Robin Blaylock.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for St. John Lutheran Church.
