Richard Benjamin "RB" Garner was born December 8, 1936 in Dowell, Maryland the son of William Bryan and Mary Ethel (Humphreys) Garner Sr. He graduated from Calvert County High School. He served in the Army from 1961-1963 as a Radio Dispatcher. On February 8, 1964 he was united in marriage to Bette Gayle Lassiter in Mt. Harmony, Maryland. He then worked as a barber in St. Leonard, Maryland for a couple of years, he then worked as a Life Insurance Agent for many years. He was born and lived on the family homestead in Dowell, Maryland all of his life before moving to Kalona in October of 1988. He attended the Kalona Mennonite Church where he met many new friends and served the Lord with gladness. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and was happiest when he was with his wife, children and grandchildren. RB died on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from complications of a heart attack at the age of 68 years. RB is survived by his wife Gayle of Kalona; 2 daughters - Julie Murray and husband Mick of Wellman; Beth Fiordelise and husband Bill of Kalona; 7 grandchildren - Brittany, Nicole, Chase and Jordan Murray; Mary Jo, Carrie and Ben Fiordelise; a brother - William Bryan Garner Jr. of Dowell, Maryland; a sister - Mabel Herring of Prince Frederick, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters - Mary Violet Dodson; Lyndall Harp; and a brother - Victor A. Garner.
A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Mennonite Church.
