South English- Richard "Dick" Allen Harris was born November 23, 1927 in rural Keokuk County, Iowa, the son of Ira Paul & Lela Roey (Lockridge) Harris. He graduated from North English High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. On December 11, 1949 Dick was united in marriage to Mary Jean Robu in Sigourney. The couple made their home in the South English community, where he was a farrier for many years. Dick was a member of the North English Christian Church, International Rodeo Assoc., Iowa Professional Farrier Assoc., Rodeo Cowboys Assoc., the South English Commercial Club, the Ross T Hadley American Legion Post #488 and was inducted in the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2000. Dick also served on the South English Fire Department for many years and was a current trustee, the South English Development Organization and the Modern Co-Op in South English. He enjoyed his horses, cattle and spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids. Dick died on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at the English Valley Care Center in North English at the age of 90 years.
He is survived by two daughters Barbara (Allan) Rickard of Hiawatha and Jan (Kevin) Stephenson of Harlingen, TX; four grandchildren Bradley (Karrie) Rickard, Traci (Cody) Nichols, Karissa (Ricky) Salvato and Jeremy Stephenson; five great grandchildren Blake & Kyle Rickard, Parker & Leigha Nichols and Braelynn Salvato; and a sister Dorothy Sampson of North English. He was preceded by his parents, wife Jean; a son Rick Harris, a sister Arlene Clark and a brother Stanley Harris.
Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 am, Monday, October 29, 2018 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the South English Cemetery with Military Rites by Ross T Hadley American Legion Post #488. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in North English.
