KEOTA - Richard Dale Shaffer, age 66, of Keota, died of cancer Saturday, October 30, 2004, at his home in Keota. Richard was born December 27, 1937, in Buchanan County, Iowa, to Dale and Mary (Brown) Shaffer and graduated from Hawkeye High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 until 1959. On March 13, 1965, he married Darlene Bandy in Washington, Iowa. Following marriage the couple made their home in Keota, where Richard drove a truck for CRST Malone. Richard was a member of the Teamsters union and enjoyed camping and fishing. Survivors include three children: Reba Shaffer of Keota, Cary Shaffer of Des Moines and Samantha Shaffer of Cedar Rapids and two brothers: Patrick and wife Esther of Prospect Heights, Illinois and Thomas and wife Sue of Springville. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Darlene in 1989, twin children: Richard and Paula in infancy, sister: Laura K. Shaffer and brother: Daniel J. Shaffer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2004, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
