Richard A. Knerr was born February 25, 1938 in Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa the son of Roy and Belva (Farrier) Knerr. He played football all through high school and graduated from Brighton High School in 1957. On August 31, 1957 he was united in marriage to Shirley Crawford in Riverside. They moved to the Wellman community in 1976. Richard raised turkeys for R&H Enterprise of Wellman and Kalona retiring in 2003. He enjoyed counted cross stitch, fishing, watching westerns, playing pitch and pinochle, listening to country western music, reading western books by Louis L'amour and spending time with his family. Richard died on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at his home in Wellman from lung cancer at the age of 73 years. Richard is survived by his wife Shirley of Wellman; three sons - Mike Knerr (Mary) of Sunrise Beach, MO; Roger Knerr (Lynn) of Wellman; Jim Knerr of Wellman; two daughters - Violet Smith (Gerry) of Keota; Valerie Winters (Steve) of Wellman; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother Robert Knerr (Babe) of Washington, Iowa; two sisters - Edna Crawford of Washington; Lois Freeman of Winfield, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers - Marion, Eugene, Jack, Larry; a nephew and three nieces. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A private graveside service will be held in the Wellman Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.
