Rev. Lewis D. Savage, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation for Rev. Savage will begin after 2:00 p.m., on Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., that evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Salem Friends Church, in Salem, IA, with Pastor Stephen Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Salem Friends Church and the Lewelling House. Lewis Dysart Savage was born January 7, 1915, on the family farm near Salem, IA. He was the son of David L. and Mae Dysart Savage. He was a graduate of Salem High School and attended William Penn College and William Jewell College. On May 26, 1936, he married Esther L. Stanley in Indianola, IA. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2001. Lewis taught in several rural Iowa schools and served as pastor in Quaker churches in Iowa, Ohio and Indiana. In 1968, Rev. Savage returned to the Salem area to serve the Cedar Creek Friends Church. Rev. Savage was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) and Salem Friends Church. He served as chairman of the Lewelling House Board for twenty years. He enjoyed farming, reading and doing historical research on the Quaker Church, the Underground Railroad and genealogy studies on his family. Lewis is survived by one son Stephen (Marilee) Savage of Salem, OH; three daughters, Sharolyn (Loren) Lisk of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Joan (William) Kildow of Lancaster, CA, and Rosalie (Jerry) Padgett of LaCrosse, WI; and one daughter-in-law, Elaine Savage of Grand Island, NE. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Along with his wife, Esther, Rev. Savage was preceded in death by two sons, George Savage and Stanley Savage; four brothers, Sam, John, Joe, and David Savage; a sister Dorothy Barber; and an infant sister, Lucille Savage.
