HARPER - Raymond Peter Hammes was born Friday, January 14, 1910 near Harper, Iowa the son of Peter and Theresa (Gries) Hammes. He attended Ss. Peter and Paul school. On August 26, 1941 he was united in marriage to Mary Bridget Lenaghan at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Keswick. Following their marriage Mary moved to the family farm near Harper where Raymond was born. They spent their lives there farming and raising their family. In 1991 they moved into Harper and in 2001 they moved to Windmill Pointe Estates in Coralville. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time outdoors on the Skunk River, planting trees, spending time with his family, playing cards and singing around the piano. Raymond died on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at Windmill Manor in Coralville following a brief illness at the age of 95 years. Raymond is survived by his wife Mary of Coralville; 13 children - Rita Adam and husband Harry of Columbus Junction; Kathleen Berg and husband Michael of Harper; Patrick "Joe" Hammes and wife Debbie of St. Charles, Illinois; Barbara Merz and husband Richard "Joe" of Cedar Rapids; Stephen Hammes and wife Jo Anne of Cedar Rapids; Connie Dooley and husband Don of Lake Oswego, Oregon; Sandy Fisher and husband Dave of Davenport; John Hammes and wife Lisa of Shawnee, Kansas; Judy Hilgenberg and husband Jim of Bettendorf; Marilyn Abrams and husband Larry of Coralville; Brenda Hammes of Coralville; Ed Hammes and wife Laurie of Sigourney; Rick Hammes and wife Peggy of Coralville; 31 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 3 brothers - Omer Hammes of Harper; Herb Hammes of Sigourney; Wilfred Hammes of Bettendorf; and a sister - Irene Willis of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son - Ronald; a brother - Floyd Hammes; and a sister - Bernice Heuberger. Raymond cared for many, was loved by many, and his presence will be missed. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at Holy Trinity Parish Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in rural Harper. Rev. Marty Goetz will officiate. Burial will be in the Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 4-8 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota where a KC Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. A Memorial fund has been established for the Congregation of Humility of Mary or Amenity Hospice.
